A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. – Luke 18:18-19 NIV
Reading this passage really stirred something up in me. Oftentimes without saying it we desire to be “good”. With books being published with titles like “Good to Great” it is obviously a prevalent desire. No one wakes up says I want to have a horrible day. I want to perform poorly. The man approached Jesus and referred to him as “good teacher”. If anyone has ever been worthy of wanting the title of “good”, Jesus fits the bill.
However, we look and the only perfect person that every walked the earth and he did not want human acknowledgement as “good”. He said only God in Heaven is truly good. I say all of this to say…don’t live for the praise of people. People have skewed view based on earthy wisdom, so their opinions don’t hold much weight. It can be easy to be puffed up with praise. That’s what happened to satan, he led the heavenly angels in worship and he started taking praise for himself. He was puffed up so much that he thought he could be God and led a rebellion against God, which got him kicked out of Heaven. Also, what will happen when people don’t think you are “good” anymore? Will your self-worth diminish because of people’s opinions?
What can we learn from Jesus’ humility?
- He knew his father enables him to teach, his wasn’t because of his own goodness.
- Point people to our God.
- Don’t desire praise for yourself.
Our Heavenly Father is true goodness. Give him praise today and every day for how GOOD he is. Let God get the glory out of your life this morning. When Jesus deflected the remark he pointed to the Father. Let your good works point those around you to God. Aim to please God and who is will shine through in your daily life. Greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world.
Let’s take a look at why God is so good. Review these scripture often and get them in your heart. No matter what you may be going through in life remember that we serve a GOOD GOD, who loves you. His goodness is faithful through ALL Generations.
